Many celebrities have expressed their thoughts, sent messages and donated to the victims affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Famous actors such as Jang Geunsuk, Kim Hyunjoong, Bae Yongjoon, and Ryu Shiwon have collectively donated over $1 million USD towards Japan. Rain, MBLAQ, and KARA have left messages and donations towards their fans, offering encouragement and hopes for their safety. SNSD also left messages for their Japanese fans. JYJ does not plan to stop at a short term donation of $600,000 USD and also plans to proactively engage in long term disaster relief through their website and upcoming world tour. When Super Junior held concerts at Taipei’s Super Dome this past weekend, all the members expressed their concern at the huge earthquake in Japan. They sent their support and encouragement over at their concerts, with Leeteuk and Siwon stating that there were many Japanese fans who had come for the Taiwan concerts. They expressed their condolences and hoped that the concerts would give everyone more strength. Big Bang’s Taeyang expressed his condolences to the earthquake victims in Japan. He stated at SBS’s Inkigayo, “As you know, there was a big earthquake in Japan. I hope Japanese fans and Koreans in Japan didn’t sustain any major damages.” On March 15th, his agency YG Entertainment announced that they’ll be donating $500,000 USD to the relief efforts in Japan. They previously set up a charity fund, through which they help various charities by donating a portion of their total album sales. A representative of YG Entertainment revealed, “We are still discussing which organization to donate to. Funds for the campaign donations were taken from album sales, and a lot of Japanese fans have taken part in the campaign throughout the years. This donation will be made to give back that support the Japanese fans have shown us.” They continued, “Campaign donations were always made at the year-end, but due to the sudden disaster in Japan, we’ve decided to go ahead and run the campaign earlier this year to aid in the relief efforts. We’re all extremely upset with the natural disasters affecting the nation.” If you are interested as well in helping the relief effort for what may be one of the greatest tragedies in modern times, visit www.redcross.org or text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone.
